What is Sound?

Sound is what we hear.
Sound comes from things that move or shake.
For example: When we clap our hands, we make a sound.

Musical Sound and Noise

• Musical sound is nice and soft.
  We hear it in songs and instruments.
  Example: piano, guitar, flute.

• Noise is not nice.
  It is loud and messy.
  Example: cars, shouting, loud machines.

Qualities of Sound

Sound has 4 parts:

• Timbre – This tells us who or what makes the sound.
  Example: A dog and a cat sound different.

• Duration – This is how long or short the sound is.

          Example: A bell can ring for a long time. A clap is short.

• Intensity – This is how loud or soft the sound is.
  Example: A lion is loud. A kitten is soft.

• Pitch (Height) – This is how high or low the sound is.
  Example: A bird sings high. A drum sounds low.
