Logo Types for Young Entrepreneurs

A logo is a symbol or picture that represents a company or brand.

The seven types of logos, with examples.

  1. Monogram logos (lettermarks)
These logos use letters, usually initials. For example, IBM, CNN, HP.
They make long names shorter and easier to remember.

  2. Wordmarks (logotypes)
These logos use the company name only, in a special font. For example, Google, Visa, Coca-Cola.
They work well when the name is short and memorable.

  3. Pictorial marks (logo symbols)
These are icons or images. Think of the Apple logo, or the bird in Twitter.
They are strong when people already know the brand.

  4. Abstract logo marks
These logos are geometric or abstract shapes, not a real object. For example, the Adidas symbol or Pepsi logo.
They allow creative designs to show a feeling or idea.

  5. Mascot logos
These logos include a character or mascot, often cartoon-like. For example, the KFC Colonel, or Mr. Peanut.
They are friendly and good to connect with families or children.

  6. Combination marks
These logos combine text and image. For example, the text plus icon side by side or together.
They are flexible and help people connect the name with a symbol.

  7. Emblem logos
These logos put text inside a shape or badge—like seals or crests. For example, Starbucks’s round logo or school crests.
They look traditional, but may be harder to use in small sizes.

Assignment: Create Logos for Your School Business Project

In this project, you will learn how to create a logo for your business idea.

Each student must create four (4) different logos, using four types from this list:

  • Monogram (letters only)

  • Wordmark (the business name in special text)

  • Pictorial mark (a simple image or icon)

  • Abstract mark (a shape or design)

  • Mascot (a cartoon or character)

  • Combination mark (text + image)

  • Emblem (text inside a shape or badge)

Each student must make 4 logos, one for each type.
Then, your group will choose 1 final logo to use for your business.
After choosing, you can make a digital version of the selected logo.

How to present your work:

  • Draw your logos in your drawing notebook.

  • Each page must have a border (frame).

  • Use colors.

  • If you don’t have a notebook, bring your work in a folder with stapled pages.

Important Rules:

  • The final logo for your business must be made in class by group members.

  • Other people cannot make the logo (no parents, no designers, no help from outside).

  • If you use a logo not made in class, it will not be graded.
