Unit 3: Rhythm – Musical Rests

 

Introduction

In music, silence is also important.
Silence helps music breathe and sound clear.
We use musical rests to show moments of silence in rhythm.

A rest tells us when not to play or sing and how long to be silent.


Musical Rests (Rest Values)

1. Whole Rest

A whole rest means silence for four beats.
We count it like this: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4

Example:

  • No sound for four beats.


2. Half Rest

A half rest means silence for two beats.
We count it like this: 1 – 2

Example:

  • No sound for two beats.


3. Quarter Rest

A quarter rest means silence for one beat.
We count it like this: 1

Example:

  • Stop for one beat.


4. Eighth Rest

An eighth rest means silence for half a beat.
We count it like this: 1 and

  • Short silence.
